You know the moment. A look that lasts a second too long. A smile over the top of a paperback. Then the doors open, one of you steps off, and that's that. Or is it?
The metro has quietly become one of the city's most romantic places. A happn survey of nearly 2,000 singles found that 35% have already had a Crush during their ride, and almost half (48%) regularly see the same faces on their daily journey. Same carriage, same time, same stranger. It's practically a meet-cute waiting to happen.
It only takes one look
Forget elaborate pick-up lines. For 38% of singles, a single glance is enough to turn a total stranger into a Crush. And it's the small, everyday things that do the rest.
The biggest turn-on? Kindness. 42% of singles fall for someone who spontaneously helps a stranger, whether that's carrying a suitcase up the stairs or giving up a seat. Next comes the person laughing alone at their phone (35%), followed by the one clearly living their best life with their headphones on (27%).
So why don't we say anything?
Here's the twist: 84% of singles regret not approaching their Crush. The reasons are painfully relatable. 42% are afraid of being unwelcome, 30% simply don't know what to say, and 18% blame the crowd getting in the way. And sometimes, the story ends for the most practical reason of all: they got off too early.
A second chance, one stop later
A missed Crush isn't always lost. A quarter of singles (24%) open happn straight after, hoping to find the person who got off before they could say hello. On an app built around the people you actually cross paths with, that stranger from the morning train might be just a scroll away.
How to make your commute count
Look up. A Crush starts with a glance, and it's hard to catch one with your eyes glued to your screen.
Be kind. Help with a bag, hold the door, offer your seat. Singles find it most attractive, and it's good manners anyway.
Don't overthink it. "Is this your stop?" is a perfectly good opening line.
Missed your chance? Open happn. The best stories sometimes get a second take.
Respect comes first. A Crush only works if it's mutual. Averted eyes, headphones going back in, a short reply: that's a no, and it deserves to be respected. Don't insist, and never follow someone off the train. Public transport should feel safe for everyone. If you experience or witness harassment, alert station staff or transport security, and call the local emergency number if you feel in danger.
