Something secret, that avoids drawing attention. We could be describing a situationship, but that is in fact the definition of a speakeasy, the kind of bar that appeared during Prohibition (1920–1933) in the United States. Operating out of sight, almost as if it were clandestine, is fundamental to the style. Which is why Purgatório sits behind a burger joint. What goes on in there, though, is anything but low-key. The drinks list, which mixes technique with Bahian ingredients such as dendê oil and cashew, is recognised across Brazil. The house has spent three years running among the 500 best bars in the world and was named the best bar in the Northeast in 2025.
