Festival des Glycines de Montchat

Festival des Glycines de Montchat

The tradition is simple and stubborn: for generations, residents have planted a wisteria in front of their house, right on the street, as a sign of welcome. The result is an entire neighbourhood that tips into violet, blue and white every spring, with hanging clusters that can exceed a metre in length. Nearly 400 plants documented, some almost a hundred years old, spread across 200 hectares. An interactive map locates every single one. Five routes on offer: on foot, by bike, by scooter. Guided walks on weekends, a photo competition, local shops joining in. What happens here is that people slow down in quiet residential streets, look up at the same spot as strangers, and find themselves comparing colour shades they wouldn't have thought to name. A way of crossing paths that only exists here, and only during these few weeks.
