Casa de Francisca
happners' hot spots
The house belongs to Francisca, but in practice it is home to a lot of people. They come to sing, play, dance, eat, even get married (true story, there are weddings here). What they share is a taste for the real thing, from the architecture — the venue occupies the Palacete Tereza Toledo Lara, built in the 1910s — to the sound. There are four spaces with separate programmes that sometimes run at once. Samba, MPB, jazz and choro move bodies that are present and free, right in the middle of São Paulo's beautiful historic centre. And if hunger kicks in after all that moving, relax: there is a spread of Brazilian small plates to get your energy back and keep the party going.

Four rooms, and we kept ending up in the same one.
We clearly could not agree on the music. We crossed paths on the stairs, then at the bar, then outside. By the fourth time, it felt silly not to just ask what he had gone in to see.
