Bagaceira
happners' hot spots
Bagaceira may be one of the Brazilian ways of describing a mess, but the one here is fairly well organised. A laid-back crowd gathers around the corner building in Vila Buarque, often standing outside. The no-frills bar look is deceptive: the snacks are prepared by a chef. Try the pork and blood sausage bolovo with a soursop and mint batida. Thursdays get livelier with piseiro, while Sundays bring a samba circle. Either way, the setting works: the bar sits at the corner of Rua Frederico Abranches and Jesuíno Pascoal, a short street full of bars and restaurants. There should be no shortage of chances to bump into someone new.

Unpretentious and lively
The pavement tables fill up quickly and the crowd naturally spreads around the corner. Good snacks, cold beer and an easy atmosphere for talking.
